El metal extremo, en su mejor forma, no solo es música; es un manifiesto. Y con su nuevo EP, «The Gospel Of Rot», la banda londinense De Profundis lo demuestra de manera contundente. Celebrando 20 años en la escena, regresan con una alineación renovada y una furia que parece haber estado fermentando en las sombras. Después de investigar su discografía, que incluye álbumes como «The Emptiness Within» (2010) y «Kingdom of the Blind» (2015), sabía que su sonido se movía entre el death y el black metal con una habilidad notable. Celebrating 20 years in the scene, they return with a rejuvenated lineup and a fury that seems to have been fermenting in the shadows. After researching their discography, which includes albums like «The Emptiness Within« (2010) and «Kingdom of the Blind« (2015), I knew their sound moved between death and black metal with notable skill. With this new work, I feel they have reached a summit.
The EP, with only four tracks, is a concentrated and devastating assault. The initial warning, which speaks of a decaying civilization and the loss of morality, is not a simple introduction; it is the heart of the record. Upon starting with «I: Corruption», I felt struck by a torrent of classic death metal, which quickly makes incursions into the realms of thrash and black metal. The new voice of Stefano Bassi is a revelation, with deep guttural tones that give substance to the brutality. The new bassist, Simon McAuliffe, also leaves an immediate mark, his instrument cutting through the mix with authority.
Despite the quality of their previous works, from the second track, «II: Deception», it’s impossible not to feel that this is their best material to date. The EP is direct and hard-hitting, but at the same time, it is full of subtle shifts and nuances that distinguish it. The vocal delivery on «III: Indoctrination» is imperious, the drumming is overwhelming, and the guitar work, simply brilliant. Every progression and every blast beat feel meticulously crafted to perfection.
The EP closes with a cover of Sepultura‘s «Subtraction», a classic they have made entirely their own. The execution is sublime and fits as an integral part of this magnificently engineered death metal machine. With a sound mixed and mastered by Matt Jones that perfectly balances clarity and power, and art by Pierre-Alain D. that evokes the atmosphere of the record, it’s hard to imagine how «The Gospel Of Rot» could have been better.
This work is not just a record, it’s a wake-up call. De Profundis does not offer salvation, but a warning that the rot is everywhere. And with this offering, they show that they have returned to the top of their game.
