Hay álbumes que son más que música; son experiencias viscerales. Y «No Dissent», el nuevo trabajo de los estadounidenses Old Year, es una de ellas. Formados en 2017 en las sombras de la escena underground de Boise, Idaho, este trío ha evolucionado de un dúo a una fuerza completa, perfeccionando un sonido que ellos mismos llaman droning doom death. Su primer sencillo ya me había dado una idea de la lentitud y el horror que evocan, pero este álbum es una inmersión completa en la muerte de la humanidad. Es un manifiesto de desolación.
El álbum comienza con «Death Frequency», una pieza que establece de inmediato una emoción sofocante. El zumbido de las guitarras sobre ritmos de batería lentos y las voces profundas y supurantes son un pronunciamiento de fatalidad. Es una canción que te drena la voluntad y el deseo, y lo reemplaza con un icor negro de desesperanza. Los gritos de agonía que se prolongan por la eternidad me recordaron a la cita de Orwell que abre el manifiesto del álbum, una bota estampada en un rostro humano, para siempre.
Con «Rotting Illusion», el álbum aprieta su agarre. Me sentí arrastrado a un abrazo claustrofóbico, con los mundos muriendo en los espacios entre los acordes. No hay momento para respirar mientras el álbum te lleva a las fauces de «Mechanical Birth», donde la amenaza se vuelve más directa. La banda, con Robert Taylor Roark en guitarras y voz, Skyler Rezendes en el bajo y Jered Veeneman en la batería, ha logrado crear un álbum que es una advertencia y una promesa de un futuro sombrío.
«No Dissent» no es para todos. Es un arrastre agonizante a través de un paisaje infernal y distópico. Pero si te gusta la música que te hace sentir incómodo y que explora las profundidades de la desesperanza, este álbum es para ti.

Formed in 2017 in the shadows of the underground scene in Boise, Idaho, this trio has evolved from a duo to a complete force, perfecting a sound they call droning doom death. Their first single had already given me an idea of the slowness and horror they evoke, but this album is a complete immersion in the death of humanity. It is a manifesto of desolation.
The album begins with «Death Frequency» a piece that immediately establishes a suffocating emotion. The hum of the guitars over slow drum rhythms and the deep, suppurating vocals are a pronouncement of doom. It’s a song that drains you of will and desire and replaces it with a black ichor of hopelessness. The screams of agony that are prolonged for eternity reminded me of the Orwell quote that opens the album’s manifesto, a boot stamping on a human face, forever.
With «Rotting Illusion» the album tightens its grip. I felt dragged into a claustrophobic embrace, with worlds dying in the spaces between the chords. There is no moment to breathe as the album takes you into the maw of «Mechanical Birth» where the threat becomes more direct. This track does not let you drown; instead, it moves toward you with hooks, making itself inescapable.
The closer, «Lock Step» is so oppressive that I felt myself dissolving under its awesome mass. When it ended, I was left without the ability to move. It takes time for the shadow of Old Year to be released from your skin and your mind. And, surprisingly, it leaves you with a strange addiction to the torment you have just escaped.
The bleak and tortured artwork of the album, courtesy of Apocalyptic Witchcraft (the label that has released this work), is a perfect vision of the sonic horror it encloses. The band, with Robert Taylor Roark on guitars and vocals, Skyler Rezendes on bass, and Jered Veeneman on drums, has managed to create an album that is a warning and a promise of a bleak future.
«No Dissent» is not for everyone. It is an agonizing crawl through a hellish and dystopian landscape. But if you like music that makes you feel uncomfortable and that explores the depths of hopelessness, this album is for you.
