El desafío de crear un álbum puramente instrumental en el metal que sea capaz de sostener la atención del oyente es inmenso. El proyecto del francés Souillé (o Defiled, que significa «contaminado»), formado en 2024, no solo asume este reto, sino que lo supera magistralmente con su debut de larga duración, «L’odeur du Mépris». Este álbum es una inmersión implacable y emocional en la melancolía y el desdén, encarnando la esencia temática de su título.
El álbum se establece firmemente sobre los cimientos del Post Black Metal, un género ideal para transmitir emoción y atmósfera solo con la música. Sin embargo, su creador no se limita, adoptando a veces la forma del black metal tradicional más puro e incluso la agresividad del heavy. La pista de apertura, «Qu’étouffent tes fidèles archanges», establece inmediatamente un tono áspero, opresivo e implacable.
Lo que me cautivó de este trabajo es cómo el músico logra pintar un paisaje sonoro de «Sturm und Drang». Sus aproximadamente 37 minutos fluyen tan bien que resulta difícil señalar pistas favoritas; es una narración sonora de una historia triste, con los altibajos emocionales que tiene la vida misma. El trabajo de guitarra por sí solo es increíblemente bueno, rico en atmósfera y con un tono y claridad impecables.
Este debut no solo es convincente, sino una digna entrada a los pasillos del black metal francés. Souillé juega con mis emociones y expectativas de una manera que exige múltiples escuchas. The project of the Frenchman Souillé (or Defiled, which means «contaminated»), formed in 2024, not only takes on this challenge but masterfully overcomes it with his full-length debut, «L’odeur du Mépris». This album is an unrelenting and emotional immersion in melancholy and disdain, embodying the thematic essence of its title.
The album is firmly established on the foundations of Post Black Metal, a genre ideal for conveying emotion and atmosphere with music alone. However, its creator is not limited, sometimes adopting the form of purer traditional black metal and even the aggression of heavy metal. The opening track, «Qu’étouffent tes fidèles archanges» immediately sets a harsh, oppressive, and unrelenting tone.
What captivated me about this work is how the musician manages to paint a soundscape of «Sturm und Drang» The music is constantly suspended in a delicate balance between unleashed aggression and melancholic melody. An excellent example is «Dénégation» which begins with a haunting, melodic introduction before collapsing into a torrent of blast beats and intensity. These melodic moments are not an embellishment, but the representation of the emotional turbulence of depression.
Musically, the execution is excellent. The guitars form layers of despair, creating a rich and deep atmosphere. The production, while retaining the rawness of black metal, offers a pristine clarity in the instrumentation, which allowed me to fully appreciate the layers of emotion delicately woven into the tracks. It is a testament to the quality that can be achieved in a one-man project.
«L’odeur du Mépris» is, above all, a work that must be assimilated as a whole. Its approximately 37 minutes flow so well that it is difficult to point out favorite tracks; it is a sonic narration of a sad story, with the emotional ups and downs that life itself has. The guitar work alone is incredibly good, rich with atmosphere and with impeccable tone and clarity.
This debut is not only convincing, but a worthy entrance into the halls of French black metal. Souillé plays with my emotions and expectations in a way that demands multiple listens. It is an impressive show of musicianship and songwriting, a self-psychoanalysis forged with rage, sadness, and contempt.

«L’odeur du Mépris» is an extraordinarily well-written debut and a promising introduction to a project with immense potential. The mastery of instrumental Post Black Metal, the excellent quality of the production that manages to be raw and pristine at the same time, and the ability to keep the listener captivated without vocals are notable. While some might seek more variation, the album’s cohesion as an «emotional journey» makes it an obligatory listen for fans of atmospheric and melancholic metal.
