And upon descending into this darkness, I encounter Putrevore, the beast spawned by two death metal icons: Dave Rotten (Avulsed, Holycide) and Rogga Johansson(Paganizer, Ribspreader, and an army of more projects). «Unending Rotting Cycle» is not just their fifth album; it is the most relentless and ravenous manifestation of their mission: to pay tribute to the hardest, heaviest, and most brutal death metal of the late ’80s and early ’90s.
From the first attack of terrifying immediacy of «No Mourning The Grace» I know exactly where I am: in the lightless catacombs of agony. Dave Rotten‘s vocals are revealed at their most tomb-trawling point, deep, guttural, and more inhuman than ever, emerging through the oppressive and thick riffs as if clawing their way up to the surface. The description of his voice as flesh-melting is accurate; it is a vicious monologue from the pit.
Rogga Johansson‘s inexhaustible supply of superlative riffs remains undiminished. There is an incredible murky darkness shrouding the entire album, but behind this wall of terror of pure death metal, I always feel the presence of a dark melody. This inherent sense of dark melody spreads tendrils of desolation through the rotting cadaver of the music. This manifests in the magnificent, rumbling, and majestically infernal «Subterranean Paths To The Temples» where the fear-infused atmosphere is simply awesome.
The drumming, courtesy of Rogga‘s regular collaborator, Thomas Ohlsson, is a steamroller. It delivers a crisp, bone-shaking thunder within the vortex of chaos, alternating between relentless speed and slower segments, as in the zombie death march of «They Worship Disarray» The album is enveloped in speed and brutality, but the blast beat is disciplined, allowing the dense and oppressive atmosphere, the true focus of Putrevore, to prevail.
The record offers no let up in its nightmarish aura. From the paean to horrors from beyond the boundaries of sanity in «Cult Of The Tentacle» to the final act of desecration, «The Cradle Replaced By The Grave» the Putrevore beast does not let go of you. This final track is haunting and morose, grinding you into the dust and extinguishing the last flickering embers of life and hope.
The mixing and mastering work by Alejandro Lobo (Avulsed guitarist) is crucial. He achieves a sound that is brutal, heavy, dense, and, above all, cavernous, moving away from any modern neatness and reinforcing the essence of a putrid, dark, and cavernous sound that the band seeks. The artwork by Lucretia Morti perfectly complements this vision: bleak, black, and bestial.
«Unending Rotting Cycle» is a testament to the black blood that runs through Putrevore‘s veins, an unremorseful example of how death metal feels most alive when it is most rotten. It is for the die-hard fans of Incantation, Immolation, and their other projects like Avulsed or Grisly, who value murky darkness and dense brutality above clean technique. This album is meant to stay underground, and that is exactly what I love.
