He sido un fan que ha seguido la evolución del metal extremo desde sus vertientes más crudas hasta las más vanguardistas, me resulta fascinante cómo un proyecto puede pasar de la frialdad minimalista de sus inicios en 2006 a la calidez pulsátil y vibrante que exhibe hoy. «In Memoriam» es el resultado de un viaje de diecinueve años, marcado por pausas, cambios de formación y, sobre todo, una búsqueda incesante de la «experiencia auditiva definitiva».
Para entender el peso de «In Memoriam», es imperativo desglosar la cronología de Superior Rage. Nacido en 2006, el proyecto se presentó inicialmente como una propuesta de black metal crudo, pero con una semilla de oscuridad sinfónica que germinaría con el tiempo. Aquella primera demo de 2008 ya sugería que no estábamos ante una banda de raw black metal al uso; había una intención atmosférica que se consolidó en «Through Infinity» (2010).
El periodo entre 2011 y 2014 fue quizás el más experimental, con la incursión en el black metal sinfónico puro en su tercer trabajo, «III», y los interesantes EPs «Fire Eternal», donde jugaron a deconstruir clásicos del género bajo una lente ambient. Sin embargo, como suele ocurrir con los proyectos de visión tan personal, la pausa de 2014 parecía el final de un capítulo. Afortunadamente, el resurgimiento en 2022 y la posterior recopilación «Anthology» (2024) prepararon el terreno para lo que hoy tenemos entre manos: una formación renovada y un sonido que ha abandonado la «congelación» de sus producciones anteriores para abrazar una producción más orgánica y llena de vida.
El EP «In Memoriam» se estructura sobre dos pilares fundamentales: la regrabación de clásicos de la banda y la presentación de material inédito que marca el nuevo rumbo estilístico.
La verdadera joya de este trabajo reside en sus temas nuevos. «The Death of the Red Dragon» es una pieza magistral que resume la esencia actual de Superior Rage. Aquí, los sintetizadores no son un mero adorno, sino el tejido conectivo que une la agresividad de las guitarras con una atmósfera trágica y épica. La batería de Maikon aporta una contundencia física que las producciones minimalistas del pasado anhelaban, mientras que las guitarras de Hrafnagud dibujan paisajes sonoros que evocan tanto la furia como la desolación.
Por otro lado, «Soleright» (que ya asomó la cabeza en la promo «Back to the Crypt») nos muestra la faceta más pulsátil del proyecto. Gracias a la inclusión de músicos de sesión, la música respira. Ya no es una entidad estática; es un organismo que late. La voz de Baelithiel aporta una textura narrativa que complementa perfectamente la visión central de Superior Rage, creando una dualidad entre lo humano y lo etéreo que es sello distintivo del black metal atmosférico de alta gama.
Regrabar clásicos es siempre una apuesta arriesgada. Se corre el riesgo de perder la «magia» de la crudeza original. Sin embargo, en «In Memoriam», piezas como «Asmodeus Bacchic» e «Indecent Condition» cobran una nueva dimensión. La versión de «Indecent Condition» cuenta con las guitarras de Nemorion, quien aporta una limpieza técnica que resalta las armonías que en 2006 quedaban sepultadas bajo la distorsión.
Es especialmente notable la evolución de «Asmodeus Bacchic». Donde antes había un minimalismo frío, ahora hay una estructura sinfónica robusta. Las letras y sintetizadores, responsabilidad directa del fundador del proyecto, se sienten más integrados, demostrando que la pausa de casi una década sirvió para refinar el oído y la técnica compositiva.
Superior Rage ha sido inteligente al reconocer sus propios límites y abrir las puertas a talento externo. Como el propio fundador afirma, la contribución de los músicos de sesión ha hecho que la música sea «más vibrante». El trabajo de Hrafnagud en las guitarras de los temas más épicos y la precisión de Maikon tras los parches han transformado lo que podría haber sido un ejercicio de nostalgia en una obra contemporánea competitiva a nivel internacional.
La voz de Baelithiel merece una mención aparte. Su interpretación en el material nuevo aporta una carga emotiva que aleja al proyecto de los clichés del género. Hay una sofisticación en su entrega que encaja perfectamente con las pretensiones atmosféricas de este EP.
El concepto de «volver a la cripta» no debe entenderse como un retroceso, sino como un regreso al origen con mejores herramientas. La producción de «In Memoriam» logra un equilibrio difícil: mantiene la oscuridad necesaria para el género pero con una claridad que permite apreciar cada capa de sintetizador y cada arreglo de bajo.
Visualmente y conceptualmente, el EP cierra un círculo. Desde aquella demo de 2008 hasta el presente, Superior Rage ha construido un imaginario coherente. La madurez se nota en la contención; ya no necesitan gritar para ser escuchados, la atmósfera que crean habla por sí sola.
«In Memoriam» es, sin duda, el trabajo más completo y satisfactorio de Superior Rage hasta la fecha. Es el puente perfecto entre el black metal sinfónico de principios de los 2010 y el metal atmosférico moderno. Logra satisfacer al fan veterano que busca la esencia de las demos originales, pero tiene la calidad suficiente para atraer a una nueva generación de oyentes que valoran la producción de alta fidelidad y las composiciones intrincadas.
El proyecto ha demostrado que la resiliencia tiene premio. Tras casi veinte años de trayectoria intermitente, Superior Rage se posiciona hoy como una de las voces más interesantes y vibrantes del metal extremo italiano. «In Memoriam» no es un epitafio; es el rugido de un dragón que se negaba a morir y que ha regresado más fuerte, más sabio y más oscuro que nunca.

Superior Rage, the project led by the tireless vision of the eponymous musician, has returned in 2025 with a work that not only looks back at the past with respect but projects a future filled with symphonic and atmospheric nuances. Their new EP, «In Memoriam», is more than a simple collection of tracks; it is a statement of principles, a «resurrection and refinement» that redefines the band’s legacy.
As a fan who has followed the evolution of extreme metal from its crudest forms to its most avant-garde branches, I find it fascinating how a project can transition from the minimalist coldness of its 2006 beginnings to the pulsating, vibrant warmth it exhibits today. «In Memoriam» is the result of a nineteen-year journey marked by hiatuses, lineup changes, and, above all, an unceasing search for the «definitive listening experience.»
To understand the weight of «In Memoriam», it is imperative to break down the chronology of Superior Rage. Born in 2006, the project initially presented itself as a raw black metal proposal, but with a seed of symphonic darkness that would germinate over time. That first 2008 demo already suggested we were not dealing with a typical raw black metal band; there was an atmospheric intention that solidified in «Through Infinity» (2010).
The period between 2011 and 2014 was perhaps the most experimental, with an incursion into pure symphonic black metal in their third work, «III», and the interesting «Fire Eternal» EPs, where they deconstructed genre classics through an ambient lens. However, as often happens with projects of such personal vision, the 2014 hiatus seemed like the end of a chapter. Fortunately, the 2022 resurgence and the subsequent «Anthology» (2024) paved the way for what we have in our hands today: a renewed lineup and a sound that has abandoned the «freezing» of its previous productions to embrace a more organic production full of life.
The «In Memoriam» EP is structured on two fundamental pillars: the re-recording of band classics and the presentation of unreleased material that marks the new stylistic direction.
The true jewel of this work lies in its new tracks. «The Death of the Red Dragon» is a masterful piece that summarizes the current essence of Superior Rage. Here, the synths are not mere ornaments but the connective tissue joining the guitars’ aggression with a tragic and epic atmosphere. Maikon’s drumming provides a physical punch that the minimalist productions of the past yearned for, while Hrafnagud’s guitars draw soundscapes that evoke both fury and desolation.
On the other hand, «Soleright» (which already peeked out in the «Back to the Crypt» promo) shows us the project’s most pulsating facet. Thanks to the inclusion of session musicians, the music breathes. It is no longer a static entity; it is a beating organism. Baelithiel’s vocals provide a narrative texture that perfectly complements the central vision of Superior Rage, creating a duality between the human and the ethereal that is the hallmark of high-end atmospheric black metal.
Re-recording classics is always a risky bet. One runs the risk of losing the «magic» of the original rawness. However, in «In Memoriam», pieces like «Asmodeus Bacchic» and «Indecent Condition» take on a new dimension. The version of «Indecent Condition» features guitars by Nemorion, who provides a technical clarity that highlights harmonies that were buried under distortion back in 2006.
The evolution of «Asmodeus Bacchic» is especially notable. Where there was once cold minimalism, there is now a robust symphonic structure. The lyrics and synths, the direct responsibility of the project’s founder, feel more integrated, proving that the nearly decade-long hiatus served to refine both the ear and the compositional technique.
Superior Rage has been intelligent in recognizing its own limits and opening its doors to external talent. As the founder himself states, the contribution of session musicians has made the music «more vibrant.» Hrafnagud’s work on the guitars of the most epic tracks and Maikon’s precision behind the kit have transformed what could have been an exercise in nostalgia into a globally competitive contemporary work.
Baelithiel’s vocals deserve a special mention. Her performance on the new material brings an emotional weight that moves the project away from genre clichés. There is a sophistication in her delivery that fits perfectly with the atmospheric pretensions of this EP.
The concept of «returning to the crypt» should not be understood as a step backward, but as a return to the origin with better tools. The production of «In Memoriam» achieves a difficult balance: it maintains the necessary darkness for the genre but with a clarity that allows one to appreciate every layer of synthesizer and every bass arrangement.
Visually and conceptually, the EP closes a circle. From that 2008 demo to the present, Superior Rage has built a coherent imagery. Maturity is noted in the restraint; they no longer need to scream to be heard—the atmosphere they create speaks for itself.
«In Memoriam» is undoubtedly the most complete and satisfying work from Superior Rage to date. It is the perfect bridge between the symphonic black metal of the early 2010s and modern atmospheric metal. It manages to satisfy the veteran fan looking for the essence of the original demos while possessing the quality to attract a new generation of listeners who value high-fidelity production and intricate compositions.
The project has shown that resilience pays off. After nearly twenty years of intermittent history, Superior Ragepositions itself today as one of the most interesting and vibrant voices in Italian extreme metal. «In Memoriam» is not an epitaph; it is the roar of a dragon that refused to die and has returned stronger, wiser, and darker than ever.
