Formados en 2015 en Calgary (Canadá), la banda Cultist han construido, a lo largo de un EP, un split junto a Euthanized y su aclamado álbum debut «Manic Despair», una identidad propia dentro del death metal más oscuro y destructivo. Fieles a la estética old school del género, pero incorporando una marcada impronta de horror cósmico, desintegración mental y una característica ofensiva de triple ataque vocal, el trío ha ido consolidando un sonido personal, aventurero y profundamente perturbador.
Ahora, la banda se prepara para dar un paso decisivo con el lanzamiento de su segundo larga duración, «Spiritual Atrophy», un trabajo que promete expandir exponencialmente su proyección dentro del underground extremo.
En el plano conceptual y lírico, «Spiritual Atrophy» se inspira en las propias experiencias del grupo con el ocultismo.
Grabado y mezclado por Scott Oliphant (Dying Remains, Snakepit) y masterizado por Rolando Rodas (Smoulder, Rites Of Thy Degringolade, Dire Omen), «Spiritual Atrophy» verá la luz el 20 de marzo a través de Awakening Records. Además, contará con una edición especial en vinilo que será publicada a finales de abril o principios de mayo por Futhark Records.
Más ambicioso y demoledor que «Manic Despair», este nuevo trabajo se erige como una manifestación de oscuridad tangible, un ejercicio de death metal que conjuga tradición, experimentación y una atmósfera de invocación constante. Un álbum que exige preparación… y quizás, algún símbolo de protección antes de sumergirse en él.
Formed in 2015 in Calgary (Canada), the band Cultist have built, through an EP, a split alongside Euthanized, and their acclaimed debut album «Manic Despair», a distinct identity within the darkest and most destructive death metal. Faithful to the old school aesthetic of the genre, yet incorporating a marked imprint of cosmic horror, mental disintegration, and a characteristic triple vocal assault, the trio have gradually consolidated a personal, adventurous, and deeply disturbing sound.
Now, the band is preparing to take a decisive step with the release of their second full-length album, «Spiritual Atrophy», a work that promises to exponentially expand their presence within the extreme underground.
On a conceptual and lyrical level, «Spiritual Atrophy» is inspired by the band’s own experiences with occultism.
Recorded and mixed by Scott Oliphant (Dying Remains, Snakepit) and mastered by Rolando Rodas (Smoulder, Rites Of Thy Degringolade, Dire Omen), «Spiritual Atrophy» will be released on March 20 through Awakening Records. In addition, it will feature a special vinyl edition to be issued in late April or early May by Futhark Records.
More ambitious and devastating than «Manic Despair», this new work stands as a manifestation of tangible darkness, an exercise in death metal that combines tradition, experimentation, and an atmosphere of constant invocation. An album that demands preparation… and perhaps some symbol of protection before immersing oneself in it.
