El incansable Rogga Johansson vuelve a la carga con Revolting, uno de sus proyectos más longevos y accesibles dentro del death metal sueco. Con «The Night of the Horrid», su noveno álbum de estudio, Revolting ofrece una nueva dosis de brutalidad pegadiza, con una fórmula que, aunque familiar, se mantiene efectiva y entretenida.

Desde su debut en 2009 con «Dreadful Pleasures», Revolting se ha caracterizado por su enfoque directo y melódico dentro de la escuela sueca, con influencias que van desde Dismember hasta Grave. Este nuevo trabajo sigue la línea de su discografía, con una producción sólida y una ejecución impecable por parte del trío compuesto por Rogga Johansson (voz/guitarra), Grotesque Tobias (bajo) y Mutated Martin (batería).

A lo largo de 33 minutos y 10 temas, Revolting despliega un death metal melódico agresivo, con riffs galopantes, solos frenéticos y una atmósfera oscura pero entretenida. Comparado con su álbum anterior, «Born to Be Dead» (2022), este trabajo suena más cohesionado y dinámico, recordando por momentos a la era Massive Killing Capacity de Dismember, con toques de Death Metal y Hate Campaign de Vomitory.

La producción es nítida pero mantiene la suciedad necesaria para preservar el carácter primitivo del género. La batería de Mutated Martin es implacable, con un uso constante del d-beat y el blast beat, mientras que el bajo de Grotesque Tobias añade una capa extra de pesadez, reforzando la pegajosidad de los riffs.

La voz de Rogga Johansson sigue siendo un punto fuerte: profunda, cavernosa y feroz. Aunque su estilo es inconfundible y ha aparecido en decenas de bandas, en Revolting se siente más afilado, con una dicción clara que permite seguir las letras sin perder la agresión.

Líricamente, el álbum gira en torno a historias de horror, mutilación y muerte, con temas como «Seven Severed Heads», «Blades Will Cut» y «Swipe of the Scythe» evocando imágenes de violencia grotesca. A pesar de lo macabro de sus temáticas, la música mantiene un tono casi festivo dentro del espectro del death metal, lo que lo hace más accesible que otras propuestas más densas o técnicas.

«Seven Severed Heads» una apertura explosiva con un riff memorable y una estructura clásica de death metal sueco. «Night of the Horrid» el tema homónimo es uno de los más agresivos, con un trabajo de guitarra afilado y una batería atronadora.«Hell From the Sky», «A Song for the Morbid», «Shapeshifter» el corazón del álbum y posiblemente su mejor sección. Aquí, Revolting encuentra el equilibrio perfecto entre brutalidad y melodía.«Swipe of the Scythe», «The Final Journey» una sección más groovy que recuerda a Casket Garden, con un ritmo más marcado y una sensación de cierre antes del Outro. «Outro» un inesperado final con una atmósfera oscura y experimental, que deja una sensación siniestra en el oyente.

Si bien «The Night of the Horrid» es un álbum entretenido, no aporta nada realmente novedoso a la fórmula de Revolting ni a la vasta discografía de Rogga Johansson. La similitud entre los temas puede hacer que algunas canciones pasen desapercibidas, y el álbum, aunque compacto, podría beneficiarse de mayor variedad en las estructuras.

Revolting no reinventa el death metal sueco, pero tampoco lo necesita. With «The Night of the Horrid», their ninth studio album, Revolting delivers another dose of catchy brutality, using a formula that, while familiar, remains effective and entertaining.

Since their 2009 debut with «Dreadful Pleasures», Revolting has been characterized by its direct and melodic approach within the Swedish school, drawing influences from Dismember to Grave. This new work follows the line of their discography, with a solid production and flawless execution by the trio consisting of Rogga Johansson (vocals/guitar), Grotesque Tobias (bass), and Mutated Martin (drums).

Over 33 minutes and 10 tracks, Revolting unleashes an aggressive melodic death metal, with galloping riffs, frantic solos, and a dark yet entertaining atmosphere. Compared to their previous album, «Born to Be Dead» (2022), this effort sounds more cohesive and dynamic, at times reminiscent of Dismember’s «Massive Killing Capacity» era, with touches of Vomitory’s Death Metal and Hate Campaign.

The production is clear but retains the necessary rawness to preserve the genre’s primitive character. Mutated Martin’s drumming is relentless, making constant use of d-beat and blast beats, while Grotesque Tobias’ bass adds an extra layer of heaviness, reinforcing the catchiness of the riffs.

Rogga Johansson’s vocals remain a strong point—deep, cavernous, and ferocious. Though his style is unmistakable and has appeared in dozens of bands, in Revolting, he sounds sharper, with clear diction that allows listeners to follow the lyrics without losing aggression.

Lyrically, the album revolves around themes of horror, mutilation, and death, with tracks like «Seven Severed Heads,» «Blades Will Cut,» and «Swipe of the Scythe» evoking grotesque imagery of violence. Despite the macabre themes, the music maintains an almost festive tone within the death metal spectrum, making it more accessible than other, denser or more technical releases.
