Como fanático del metal, no hay nada que disfrute más que ver a una banda evolucionar. Cuando supe que Phobetor, la banda de blackened death metal de Londres, regresaba con un nuevo álbum, «A Solitary Vigil», cuatro años después de su último trabajo, mi interés se encendió. Y con la incorporación de Ben Ash (Strigoi, Carcass) a sus filas, supe que algo grande se estaba gestando. Este álbum es un testimonio de esa evolución y de la paciencia en la creación musical.El álbum se abre con la pista que le da nombre, «A Solitary Vigil». Desde el primer momento, sentí esa atmósfera oscura y ominosa, que se volvió más poderosa con la entrada de las voces. La mezcla de vitriolo agudo y gruñidos más bajos de Debora Conserva es soberbia, y la música se eleva para igualar su intensidad. Musicalmente, es una pieza compleja, altísima y enormemente atmosférica. Solo con esta canción, uno entiende por qué se tomaron cuatro años para este lanzamiento.
«Absence Of Light» comienza limpia y reflexiva, construyéndose en olas con golpes de batería que dominan el sonido. El fraseo de esta pista es impactante y poderoso, pero con giros y vueltas complejos que lo elevan. La forma en que Phobetor se mueve entre el black y el death metal es fluida y natural, demostrando una facilidad consumada.
Uno de mis momentos favoritos fue el peculiar comienzo de bajo en «Black Fading Winter». Se transforma en un conductor predominante de d-beat, salpicado de intensas franjas y una entrega vocal ácida. La segunda mitad de la pista, con su caída lúgubre, me tomó por sorpresa. Es inquietante y atmosférica, y cuando se reconstruye, se eleva con gritos cáusticos antes de un final abrupto y dramático. Es un momento de genialidad que muestra la esencia sin compromisos de la banda.
Con «The Vacant World Within Us», la banda nos ofrece un drama constante. Los cambios de ritmo son extremos, subiendo de pasajes lentos y ominosos a un ritmo galopante donde las voces dominan. El trabajo de Ash junto a Ross White en las guitarras es sublime. Demuestran que son grandes socios en el crimen, con riffs cargados de groove en las partes más lentas.
El álbum cierra con «Where Mournful Shadows Dwell». Esta pieza destila un horror acechante. Los ritmos gruesos y el trabajo de guitarra chirriante te atrapan desde el principio. El horror se intensifica, y el ritmo sube y baja de manera sutil, pero siempre está presente. Incluso a mitad de la pista, con un pasaje limpio y espeluznante, la sensación de amenaza no desaparece. As a metal fan, there’s nothing I enjoy more than watching a band evolve. When I learned that Phobetor, the London-based blackened death metal band, was returning with a new album, «A Solitary Vigil», four years after their last work, my interest was piqued. And with the addition of Ben Ash (Strigoi, Carcass) to their ranks, I knew something big was brewing. This album is a testament to that evolution and the patience in musical creation.
The album opens with the title track, «A Solitary Vigil». From the first moment, I felt that dark and ominous atmosphere, which became more powerful with the entry of the vocals. Debora Conserva‘s mix of high vitriol and lower growls is superb, and the music soars to match her intensity. Musically, it is a complex, soaring, and enormously atmospheric piece. With this song alone, one understands why they took four years for this release.
«Absence Of Light» begins clean and reflective, building in waves with drum hits that dominate the sound. The phrasing of this track is impactful and powerful, but with complex twists and turns that elevate it. The way Phobetor moves between black and death metal is fluid and natural, demonstrating a consummate ease.
One of my favorite moments was the quirky bass opening on «Black Fading Winter». It transforms into a predominant d-beat driver, punctuated with intense swathes and an acidic vocal delivery. The second half of the track, with its gloomy drop, caught me by surprise. It’s unsettling and atmospheric, and when it rebuilds, it soars with caustic screams before an abrupt and dramatic end. It’s a moment of genius that shows the band’s uncompromising essence.
With «The Vacant World Within Us», the band offers us constant drama. The tempo changes are extreme, rising from slow and ominous passages to a galloping pace where the vocals dominate. The work of Ashalongside Ross White on guitars is sublime. They prove to be great partners in crime, with riffs laden with groove in the slower parts.
The album closes with «Where Mournful Shadows Dwell». This piece distills a lurking horror. The chunky rhythms and screeching guitar work hook you from the start. The horror intensifies, and the pace rises and falls subtly, but it is always present. Even in the middle of the track, with a clean and eerie passage, the sense of threat does not disappear. I loved how the music becomes crushing as it reaches its zenith, fading out with the return of that creepy passage. It’s a delightful way to close the record.
This album is a burnt offering that feels like a big step forward for Phobetor. Mixed by Ollie Roberts and mastered by Lawrence Mackrory, the production is impeccable. The only problem is its short length; after twenty-one minutes, I was left wanting much more. But that is a sign that the band has reached a critical mass and has managed to outdo themselves.
