Cuando una banda desaparece por un tiempo y regresa con un nuevo álbum, siempre me pregunto qué ha estado haciendo. Sublime Eyes, una banda noruega que ha existido desde 2007, había estado en silencio durante seis años. Con un enfoque en el melodic death metal al estilo sueco, su catálogo anterior, aunque brutal, a veces carecía de esa melodía que esperaba. Pero con su cuarto álbum, «IV: The Serpent’s Coil», sentí que algo había cambiado, y para bien.
La banda, que firmó con WormHoleDeath, ha decidido mirar más hacia su propia tradición noruega, y se nota. El sonido ahora es más épico, con guitarras más afiladas y una atmósfera oscura que me recordó a gigantes como Dimmu Borgir o incluso Keep of Kalessin. El vocalista Arvid Tjelta ha evolucionado de manera notable, ofreciendo una variedad de estilos vocales que van desde cantos limpios hasta growls o harsh, demostrando un rango exquisito.
El álbum, a pesar de sus 39 minutos, está lleno de ideas, quizás demasiadas a veces. En canciones como «Pray for Death», se puede escuchar cuánto ha madurado la banda. «Venomous Curse» muestra una ambición desbordada, aunque su estribillo sombrío y frío es un punto a favor. «Inferno Begins» es una pieza más condensada y con una dirección clara, mostrando el potencial del grupo cuando sus ideas están más pulidas.
«Echoes» es una pieza instrumental elegante y un respiro necesario antes del ataque de «Emperor’s Mountain». Sin embargo, en pistas como «Serpent’s Coil» y el cierre, «Blades of Chaos», sentí que caían en un exceso de forma sobre el contenido, con una cierta genericidad que me recordó a sus trabajos anteriores. El sonido del álbum, aunque en general es bueno, tiene un problema de equilibrio: la batería está muy alta y las guitarras suenan borrosas, lo que a veces ahoga las voces.
A pesar de estas fallas, «IV: The Serpent’s Coil» es el mejor álbum de Sublime Eyes hasta la fecha. Si bien no todas las ideas encajan a la perfección, los momentos en los que lo hacen, como en «Inferno Begins», me recordaron lo mejor del género. Es un álbum que demuestra un gran potencial y establece una buena base para el futuro de la banda.

When a band disappears for a while and returns with a new album, I always wonder what they’ve been up to. Sublime Eyes, a Norwegian band that has been around since 2007, had been silent for six years. With a focus on Swedish-style melodic death metal, their previous catalog, although brutal, sometimes lacked the melody I expected. But with their fourth album, «IV: The Serpent’s Coil», I felt that something had changed, and for the better.
The band, who signed with WormHoleDeath, has decided to look more towards their own Norwegian tradition, and it shows. The sound is now more epic, with sharper guitars and a dark atmosphere that reminded me of giants like Dimmu Borgir or even Keep of Kalessin. Vocalist Arvid Tjelta has evolved remarkably, offering a variety of vocal styles ranging from clean singing to growls or harsh, demonstrating an exquisite range.
The album, despite its 39 minutes, is full of ideas, perhaps too many at times. In songs like «Pray for Death», you can hear how much the band has matured. «Venomous Curse» shows an overflowing ambition, although its somber and cold chorus is a plus. «Inferno Begins» is a more condensed piece with a clear direction, showing the group’s potential when their ideas are more polished.
«Echoes» is an elegant instrumental piece and a necessary respite before the attack of «Emperor’s Mountain». However, on tracks like «Serpent’s Coil» and the closer, «Blades of Chaos», I felt they fell into an excess of form over content, with a certain genericness that reminded me of their previous works. The album’s sound, although generally good, has a balance problem: the drums are too loud and the guitars sound blurry, which sometimes drowns out the vocals.
Despite these flaws, «IV: The Serpent’s Coil» is the best album from Sublime Eyes to date. While not all ideas fit together perfectly, the moments where they do, as in «Inferno Begins», reminded me of the best of the genre. It is an album that shows great potential and sets a good foundation for the band’s future.

Although the overabundance of ideas and some production problems prevent it from being a masterpiece, the moments of brilliance are strong enough to make it a worthy listen.
