Entrevista a HyperioN

• «Cybergenesis» es vuestro tercer álbum y parece ser un disco conceptual de ciencia ficción oscura. ¿Podríais contarnos más sobre la historia que se desarrolla en el álbum y cómo la ciencia ficción clásica influyó en su creación?

«Cybergenesis» cuenta la historia de una guerra donde la humanidad se enfrenta a una inteligencia alienígena similar a una colmena que amenaza con borrar la individualidad misma. No se trata solo de supervivencia, sino del espíritu de ser humano, la voluntad de permanecer consciente y libre en un mundo gobernado por máquinas. Todo el concepto fue alimentado por mi amor de toda la vida por la ciencia ficción, desde programas de televisión como Star Trek y Battlestar Galactica hasta clásicos de autores como Philip K. Dick, William Gibson y, por supuesto, Dan Simmons, y también películas como The Matrix, Solaris y Ghost in the Shell. Todas esas influencias se fusionaron en una visión oscura y futurista que se convirtió en «Cybergenesis».

• Davide tu eres el único miembro original pero sigues siendo la fuerza impulsora detrás de la banda. ¿Cómo ha afectado esta renovación de la formación a la dinámica de HyperioN y al proceso de composición de «Cybergenesis»?

Aunque escribo la mayoría de las canciones, HyperioN nunca ha sido un proyecto en solitario. La retroalimentación que recibo de los otros miembros durante los ensayos es esencial, actúa como un filtro que ayuda a refinar y dar forma a las ideas que presento. Para este álbum en particular, a menudo escribí hasta tres versiones musicales diferentes para cada conjunto de letras antes de elegir la que se sentía más coherente con el concepto general de «Cybergenesis».

• El primer sencillo, «Deafening», ya ha sido lanzado. ¿Qué representa esta canción dentro del contexto del álbum y por qué la elegisteis como la tarjeta de presentación de «Cybergenesis»?

Dado que «Cybergenesis» es un álbum conceptual con una única narrativa que se desarrolla a lo largo de ocho canciones, queríamos presentar la historia a nuestros fans comenzando con lo que es esencialmente su primer capítulo. Si «Cybergenesis» fuera una película de acción de ciencia ficción de los 80, «Deafening» sería definitivamente esa secuencia inicial explosiva, llena de energía, caos y efectos especiales. Desde un punto de vista narrativo, es el evento inesperado que pone todo en marcha.

• Describís vuestro sonido como fiel a sus raíces: riffs impulsivos, ráfagas de velocidad y hooks melódicos. ¿Sentís que habéis evolucionado dentro de estas raíces en comparación con vuestro trabajo anterior?

Trabajar en un álbum conceptual en lugar de una simple colección de canciones separadas realmente influyó en la forma en que abordamos la composición esta vez. Cada pista tenía que encajar en la historia más grande, tanto musical como líricamente. Y aunque «Cybergenesis» todavía lleva todas las marcas registradas de nuestro sonido, tener una alineación que es nueva en cuatro quintas partes definitivamente moldeó cómo resultaron las canciones y los arreglos. Los nuevos miembros aportaron diferentes influencias y estilos de interpretación, lo que ayudó a que los arreglos sonaran más ajustados, frescos y orgánicos.

• El álbum presenta una portada pintada a mano por Ryan T. Hancock. En una era digital, ¿por qué fue importante para vosotros optar por una obra de arte física y no generada por IA para la identidad visual de «Cybergenesis»?

Crecí escuchando heavy metal y perdiéndome en esas increíbles portadas de álbumes. Eran pinturas reales creadas por artistas visionarios que ayudaron a construir la magia alrededor de la música. Últimamente, he visto cada vez más bandas, incluso grandes y profesionales, recurriendo a obras de arte generadas por IA. Entiendo que para algunos es una opción económica fácil, pero sinceramente, se siente un poco triste. Lo que realmente me molesta es que a la mayoría de los fans ya no parece importarles. El problema es que, al hacer eso, le estás quitando trabajo a artistas reales y aplanando lentamente toda la imaginación visual que siempre ha sido una parte tan vital de la cultura del metal.

• «Cybergenesis» toca temas de resistencia y sacrificio en un futuro distópico. ¿Hay algún paralelismo o mensaje que quisierais transmitir a vuestros oyentes sobre el mundo actual a través de esta narrativa de ciencia ficción?

Desde el principio, mi objetivo fue escribir una narrativa de ciencia ficción pura, algo que pudiera sentirse como una de esas películas de serie B de culto de los 80 o las novelas pulp de esa época. Por supuesto, es imposible no ser influenciado, incluso inconscientemente, por lo que está sucediendo a nuestro alrededor: guerras a solo unos cientos de kilómetros de distancia, el auge de la IA, la pandemia… todos estos eventos de alguna manera dejaron una marca en la historia. Si quieres encontrar reflejos de nuestro mundo en «Cybergenesis», están ahí. Pero me gusta la idea de que cada uno pueda interpretar el álbum a su manera: puede ser puro escapismo o un espejo de los tiempos que estamos viviendo.

• Con el lanzamiento programado para enero de 2026, ¿cuáles son los planes de HyperioN para apoyar el álbum, incluyendo giras o apariciones en festivales?

Ya estamos trabajando en los primeros shows para 2026, y tan pronto como todo esté confirmado, lo anunciaremos en nuestras redes sociales. ¡No podemos esperar para tocar «Cybergenesis» en vivo, estas canciones fueron hechas para ser interpretadas! Después de tanto tiempo lejos del escenario, es hora de dar vida a esta historia frente a los fans.

• Venís de la escena metalera italiana, conocida por una variedad de subgéneros. ¿Qué desafíos y oportunidades encontráis al ser una banda de Heavy Metal tradicional en Italia?

Italia tiene en realidad muchas bandas geniales tocando heavy metal tradicional, cada una con su propio sonido e identidad únicos. El problema es que este estilo no recibe mucha atención de la escena local, y ves bandas como la nuestra obteniendo mucho más reconocimiento y oportunidades en el extranjero, especialmente en lo que respecta a shows en vivo o festivales. Aquí, muchas bandas de heavy metal terminan organizando sus propios conciertos solo para tener la oportunidad de tocar, porque sin las conexiones adecuadas, es fácil quedar completamente excluido. Es frustrante, pero al mismo tiempo muestra quién está realmente en esto por amor a la música.

• Si tuvieras que elegir una pista de «Cybergenesis», aparte del sencillo ya lanzado, que mejor represente la atmósfera general del álbum, ¿cuál sería y por qué?

Es una elección difícil, pero probablemente elegiría la pista dos, «Rewire, Rebuild». Es una de las primeras canciones en las que trabajamos junto con «Deafening», y realmente captura la atmósfera general del álbum. Creo que combina perfectamente la sensación épica y la energía cruda que ha definido el sonido de HyperioN desde el principio.

• Después de tres álbumes de larga duración, ¿qué objetivos o sueños musicales todavía aspira a alcanzar HyperioN?

¡Recién estamos empezando! Con «Cybergenesis», hemos encontrado un nuevo sentido de propósito y dirección, y ya he comenzado a escribir material nuevo para nuestro próximo álbum. Uno de mis sueños es llevar a la banda a festivales dedicados a nuestro tipo de sonido, como Keep It True o el antiguo Bang Your Head: creo que nuestro show sería perfecto para ese entorno. • «Cybergenesis» is your third album and appears to be a dark sci-fi concept record. Could you tell us more about the story unfolding in the album and how classic science fiction influenced its creation?

«Cybergenesis» tells the story of a war where humanity faces a hive-like alien intelligence that threatens to erase individuality itself. It’s not just about survival, but about the spirit of being human, the will to stay conscious and free in a world ruled by machines. The whole concept was fueled by my lifelong love for sci-fi, from TV shows like Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica to classics from authors like Philip K. Dick, William Gibson and of course Dan Simmons, and also movies like The Matrix, Solaris, and Ghost in the Shell. All those influences merged into one dark, futuristic vision that became «Cybergenesis».

• Davide you are only original member but remains the driving force behind the band. How has this lineup renewal affected Hyperion’s dynamic and the songwriting process for «Cybergenesis»?

Even though I write most of the songs, HyperioN has never been a solo project. The feedback I get from the other members during rehearsals is essential, it acts like a filter that helps refine and shape the ideas I bring in. For this album in particular, I often wrote up to three different musical versions for each set of lyrics before we picked the one that felt the most consistent with the overall concept of «Cybergenesis».

• The first single, «Deafening» has already been released. What does this song represent within the context of the album, and why did you choose it as the calling card for «Cybergenesis»?

Since «Cybergenesis» is a concept album with a single narrative running through eight songs, we wanted to introduce our fans to the story by starting with what is essentially its first chapter. If «Cybergenesis»were an ’80s sci-fi action movie, «Deafening» would definitely be that explosive opening sequence, full of energy, chaos, and special effects. From a storytelling point of view, it’s the unexpected event that sets everything in motion.

• You describe your sound as true to its roots: driving riffs, bursts of speed, and melodic hooks. Do you feel you have evolved within these roots compared to your previous work?

Working on a concept album instead of a simple collection of separate songs really influenced the way we approached the writing this time. Every track had to fit into the bigger story, both musically and lyrically. And even though «Cybergenesis» still carries all the trademarks of our sound, having a lineup that’s four-fifths new definitely shaped how the songs and arrangements turned out. The new members brought different influences and playing styles, which helped the arrangements sound tighter, fresher, and more organic.

• The album features a hand-painted cover by Ryan T. Hancock. In a digital age, why was it important for you to opt for a physical, non-AI artwork for the visual identity of «Cybergenesis»?

I grew up listening to heavy metal and getting lost in those amazing album covers. Those were real paintings created by visionary artists who helped build the magic around the music. Lately, I’ve seen more and more bands, even big professional ones, turning to AI-generated artwork. I get that for some it’s an easy economic choice, but honestly, it feels a bit sad. What really bothers me is that most fans don’t seem to care anymore. The problem is, by doing that, you’re taking work away from real artists and slowly flattening the whole visual imagination that has always been such a vital part of metal culture.

• «Cybergenesis» touches on themes of resistance and sacrifice in a dystopian future. Are there any parallels or messages you wanted to convey to your listeners about the current world through this science fiction narrative?

From the very beginning, my goal was to write a pure sci-fi narrative, something that could feel like one of those cult ’80s B-movies or the pulp novels of that era. Of course, it’s impossible not to be influenced, even unconsciously, by what’s happening around us: wars just a few hundred kilometers away, the rise of AI, the pandemic… all these events somehow left a mark on the story. If you want to find reflections of our world in «Cybergenesis», they’re there. But I like the idea that everyone can interpret the album in their own way: it can be pure escapism, or a mirror of the times we’re living in.

• With the release scheduled for January 2026, what are HyperioN’s plans to support the album, including touring or festival appearances?

We’re already working on the first shows for 2026, and as soon as everything’s confirmed we’ll announce them on our socials. We can’t wait to play «Cybergenesis» live, these songs were made to be performed! After so long away from the stage, it’s time to bring this story to life in front of the fans.

• You come from the Italian metal scene, which is known for a variety of subgenres. What challenges and opportunities do you find being a traditional Heavy Metal band in Italy?

Italy actually has a lot of great bands playing traditional heavy metal, each with its own unique sound and identity. The problem is that this style doesn’t get much attention from the local scene, and you see bands like ours getting far more recognition and opportunities abroad, especially when it comes to live shows or festivals. Here, many heavy metal bands end up organizing their own gigs just to have the chance to play, because without the right connections, it’s easy to get completely cut off. It’s frustrating, but at the same time it shows who’s really in this for the love of the music.

• If you had to choose one track from «Cybergenesis» other than the already released single, that best represents the overall atmosphere of the album, which would it be and why?

That’s a tough choice, but I’d probably pick track two, «Rewire, Rebuild». It’s one of the first songs we worked on together with «Deafening», and it really captures the overall atmosphere of the album. I think it perfectly blends the epic feel and the raw energy that has defined HyperioN’s sound since the very beginning.

• After three full-length albums, what musical goals or dreams does HyperioN still aim to achieve?

We’re just getting started! With «Cybergenesis» we’ve found a new sense of purpose and direction, and I’ve already begun writing new material for our next album. One of my dreams is to bring the band to festivals dedicated to our kind of sound, like Keep It True or the old Bang Your Head: I think our show would be perfect for that environment. Now that we have a stable and hungry lineup, I also hope we won’t need another six years to release the next album!
