Con una propuesta épica y cargada de influencias mitológicas, han conseguido forjar un sonido propio que les ha llevado a consolidarse dentro de la escena underground europea. Su último trabajo, Ages of Man, inspirado en la mitología griega y las Edades del Hombre de Hesíodo, ha mostrando una evolución notable respecto a su debut When Fire Engulfs the Earth.
El próximo 16 de mayo de 2025, Dark Oath actuará en The Godfather Rock Club de Madrid, prometiendo un directo demoledor en el que repasarán su más reciente material y algunos clásicos de su carrera. Con motivo de este esperado concierto, tuvimos la oportunidad de charlar con la banda sobre su evolución, influencias y expectativas para su regreso a España.

1. Su último álbum, Ages of Man, ha sido elogiado por su compleja composición y sus profundas temáticas líricas. ¿Cómo se sienten respecto a la recepción que ha tenido hasta ahora?
Hasta ahora ha sido mejor de lo que esperábamos. Pasaron ocho años entre Ages of Man y nuestro primer álbum When Fire Engulfs the Earth. Introdujimos una nueva temática para este disco y, obviamente, la música refleja ese cambio, así que no sabíamos cómo lo recibiría la gente. Pero afortunadamente ha sido muy bien recibido.
2. Dark Oath ha construido una identidad fuerte en torno a la mitología y la historia. ¿Qué los llevó a centrar Ages of Man en la mitología griega y el concepto de las Edades del Hombre de Hesíodo?
Honestamente, no hubo un motivo específico para centrarnos en la mitología griega en este álbum. Solo sabíamos que aún queríamos escribir sobre una civilización o mitología europea, y de manera natural nos inclinamos hacia la Antigua Grecia.
3. Comparado con su álbum debut When Fire Engulfs the Earth, ¿cómo dirían que ha evolucionado su sonido en Ages of Man?
Como cambiamos la temática lírica, intentamos escribir una ambientación sonora que encajara con ese tema en particular, por lo que el sonido es inherentemente diferente al de nuestro álbum debut. Obviamente tratamos de mantener la esencia de la banda, pero dentro de un paisaje sonoro más acorde con la temática, y creemos que lo logramos con éxito.
4. Actuarán en Madrid el 16 de mayo de 2025. ¿Qué pueden esperar los fans españoles de su concierto en cuanto a repertorio, puesta en escena y energía?
El repertorio estará centrado principalmente en Ages of Man, pero también tocaremos una o dos canciones de nuestro primer álbum. En cuanto a la puesta en escena, siempre intentamos darlo todo sobre el escenario.

5. ¿Han tocado antes en España? Si es así, ¿cómo ha respondido el público español a su música?
El año pasado tocamos en Santander, Barcelona, Vigo, Sarria y La Coruña, y nos encantó cada concierto. Por supuesto, cada uno es una experiencia diferente, pero hasta ahora hemos disfrutado cada uno de ellos.
6. ¿Siguen o admiran a alguna banda española de metal? ¿Han influenciado su música de alguna manera?
Estamos al tanto de muchas bandas underground españolas de distintos géneros, pero probablemente seguimos más a bandas que tocan folk metal y death metal melódico.
7. En entrevistas anteriores han mencionado influencias de bandas como Dark Tranquillity y Wintersun. ¿Cómo han moldeado estas influencias su sonido? ¿Hay otras bandas, pasadas o presentes, que hayan impactado significativamente en su música?
Dark Tranquillity y Wintersun son dos de nuestras principales influencias, sí, pero también nos han marcado bandas como Insomnium, Ensiferum, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Septicflesh y Rotting Christ, así como otras más pequeñas como Brymir y Aephanemer, entre muchas más. Nuestra música está influenciada por todo lo que escuchamos, no solo metal, sino también películas, series de televisión e incluso videojuegos.
8. Ages of Man fue lanzado tanto en versión estándar como instrumental. ¿Qué los inspiró a ofrecer una edición instrumental y cómo ha sido recibida por sus fans?
Dado que nuestra música es muy detallada en cuanto a orquestaciones e instrumentos folk, pensamos que una versión instrumental podría gustar a algunos fans, y de hecho así ha sido.
9. Aparte de Madrid, ¿tienen más fechas de gira programadas en España o Europa en 2025?
Tenemos más fechas tanto en Europa como en España, pero aún no han sido anunciadas. Todavía estamos trabajando en ello, ¡pero sin duda sucederá!
10. La banda ha pasado por cambios en su alineación a lo largo de los años. ¿Cómo han afectado estos cambios a su dirección musical y proceso creativo?
Afortunadamente, no ha afectado demasiado, principalmente porque yo (Joël Martins) escribo la mayoría de la música. Siempre deliberamos juntos al hacer los arreglos, pero como yo compongo la base de todo, los cambios de alineación a lo largo de los años no han tenido un gran impacto en el proceso creativo.
11. En febrero de 2024, organizaron el Shores of Death Metal Fest en Figueira da Foz para celebrar el lanzamiento de Ages of Man. ¿Cuáles fueron las principales conclusiones de esa experiencia? ¿Planean organizar eventos similares en el futuro?
Fue una experiencia increíble, tanto que ya hicimos una segunda edición este pasado febrero, con la banda española Bloodhunter como cabeza de cartel. Probablemente seguiremos organizándolo mientras tengamos los medios para hacerlo.
12. Finalmente, ¿qué mensaje les gustaría enviar a sus fans españoles que esperan con ansias su concierto en Madrid?

Introduction to Dark Oath
Portuguese melodic death metal is experiencing a great moment, and Dark Oath is one of the bands that best represents it. With an epic approach full of mythological influences, they have managed to forge a unique sound that has solidified their place in the European underground scene. Their latest work, Ages of Man, inspired by Greek mythology and Hesiod’s Ages of Man, has been enthusiastically received by fans of the genre, showcasing a remarkable evolution compared to their debut, When Fire Engulfs the Earth.
On May 16, 2025, Dark Oath will perform at The Godfather Rock Club in Madrid, promising a devastating live show where they will revisit their latest material and some classics from their career. In anticipation of this highly awaited concert, we had the opportunity to talk with the band about their evolution, influences, and expectations for their return to Spain.

Interview with Dark Oath
- Your latest album, Ages of Man, has been praised for its intricate composition and deep lyrical themes. How do you feel about the reception it has received so far?
So far it has been better than we expected. Eight years passed between Ages of Man and our first album When Fire Engulfs the Earth, we introduced a new theme for this new album and obviously the music itself reflects that, so we didn’t really know how people would take it. But fortunately it has been well received.
- Dark Oath has built a strong identity around mythology and history. What led you to focus Ages of Man on Greek mythology and Hesiod’s Ages of Man concept?
Honestly there wasn’t anything specific that led us to focus on Greek mythology for this album. We just knew we still wanted to write about a civilization/mythology from Europe, and we gravitated naturally to Ancient Greece.
- Compared to your debut album, When Fire Engulfs the Earth, how would you say your sound has evolved in Ages of Man?
Because we changed the lyrical theme, we tried to write a soundscape for that exact theme, hence the sound being inherently different from our debut album. We obviously tried to maintain what the band sounds like but within a more appropriate soundscape for the theme, which I think we achieved successfully.
- You will be performing in Madrid on May 16, 2025. What can Spanish fans expect from your show in terms of setlist, stage performance, and energy?
The setlist will be mainly focused on “Ages of Man”, but we do play one or two songs from our debut album. Regarding stage performance, we always try to give everything we have on stage.
- Have you performed in Spain before? If so, how has the Spanish audience responded to your music?
Last year we played in Santander, Barcelona, Vigo, Sarria and La Coruña, and we loved every show. Of course each is its own experience, but so far we’ve been loving it each time.
- Are there any Spanish metal bands that you follow or admire? Have they influenced you in any way?
We’re aware of a lot of spanish underground bands from multiple genres, but we follow probably more bands that play folk metal and melodic death metal.
- In previous interviews, you have mentioned influences from bands like Dark Tranquillity and Wintersun. How have these influences shaped your sound, and are there any other bands, past or present, that have significantly impacted your music?
Dark Tranquillity and Wintersun are two main ones yes, but also bands like Insomnium, Ensiferum, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Septicflesh, Rotting Christ, as well as smaller bands like Brymir, Aephanemer, and many more. Our music is influenced by everything we listen to, not only metal, as well as movies, tv shows, even video games.
- Ages of Man was released in both standard and instrumental versions. What inspired you to offer an instrumental edition, and how has it been received by your fans?
Since our music is so detailed considering the orchestra and folk instruments, we figured an instrumental version would be something that at least a few fans would enjoy, and indeed they do.
- Besides Madrid, do you have any other planned tour dates in Spain or across Europe in 2025?
We do have more tour dates both across Europe and Spain but they haven’t been announced yet, it’s still a work in progress. But it will happen for sure.
- The band has gone through lineup changes over the years. How have these transitions impacted your musical direction and creative process?
Fortunately it hasn’t, mainly due to the fact that I (Joël Martins) right most of the music myself. I always deliberate with the rest of the band when doing the arrangements, but since I write the basis of everything, the lineup changes through the years haven’t had much impact in the creative process.
- In February 2024, you organized the Shores of Death Metal Fest in Figueira da Foz to celebrate the release of Ages of Man. What were the key takeaways from this experience, and do you plan to organize similar events in the future?
It was an awesome experience, so much so that we already did the second edition this past February, actually with the spanish band Bloodhunter as headliners, and we’ll probably keep doing it as long as we have the means to do it.
- Finally, what message would you like to send to your Spanish fans eagerly awaiting your show in Madrid?
We’re super excited to finally play in Madrid, and we hope people are as excited as we are. We’ll try our best to deliver an awesome performance. See you there!
