Desde las profundidades del aislamiento pandémico, surge un manifiesto de crudeza sonora que atraviesa hemisferios. «Of Vile and Hate», el debut del dúo D.E.A.D, compuesto por el baterista sueco Niels Nielsen y el guitarrista y vocalista australiano Adam Keane, es una descarga implacable de death metal con tintes de thrash que, si bien se nutre de influencias clásicas, apuesta por una intensidad que arrasa sin miramientos. Con sus raíces repartidas entre Suecia y Australia, el álbum encapsula una visión global del death metal: técnica precisa, brutalidad sin filtros y una narrativa sombría que recorre la última etapa de un hombre en su descenso hacia una metamorfosis demoníaca.

Grabado en Adelaida, mezclado en Suecia por Olof Berggren y con un diseño visual a cargo de Will Clement, «Of Vile and Hate» suena crudo, afilado y sin concesiones. Desde los primeros compases de «Before I Die», el disco deja claro que el dúo está dispuesto a explorar la agresividad a través de un «shredding» constante y riffs que parecen aflorar desde un abismo de odio visceral. La ejecución de Nielsen en la batería es milimétrica, alternando patrones rápidos con momentos de groove que añaden peso y contundencia a cada ataque. Por su parte, Keane despliega una artillería de riffs que canalizan tanto el vértigo del thrash como la densidad del death más sucio.

Sin embargo, no todo es una explosión incontrolada. En piezas como «Death Toll» y «The Manifest», la banda pisa el freno para instaurar un ritmo machacón, casi ritualístico, donde los staccatos invitan al headbanging más puro. Estos temas destacan no solo por su ejecución, sino por su capacidad para construir una atmósfera densa y aplastante. Lo mismo ocurre en «Race to the Grave», que recuerda en su estructura galopante a los primeros trabajos de The Crown, con un equilibrio perfecto entre brutalidad y dinamismo.

Lo que D.E.A.D propone en «Of Vile and Hate» no es simplemente una colección de canciones; es un recorrido por un descenso hacia lo abismal. La trama conceptual del álbum gira en torno a un hombre enfrentando sus últimos días, en una transformación física y espiritual que va desde la decadencia corporal hasta una resurrección teñida de carmesí. Este concepto se palpa sobre todo en «Buried» y «Dead», donde los riffs adquieren un tono lúgubre y opresivo, como si arrastraran al oyente por un túnel sin luz.

El cierre con «The Spread», aunque poderoso en su estructura, es quizás uno de los momentos donde la banda se deja llevar más por la demostración técnica que por la cohesión compositiva, algo que también ocurre en ciertos tramos de «Before I Die». Aunque el nivel de ejecución es notable, en algunos momentos esa energía desenfrenada parece alejarse del núcleo narrativo, perdiendo un poco el enfoque. Un detalle menor en un álbum que, en general, sabe administrar muy bien sus recursos.

«Of Vile and Hate» es un debut rotundo y honesto, una declaración de intenciones de un dúo que, a pesar de la distancia, ha logrado conjurar un death metal implacable, crudo y sin concesiones. Las influencias del death sueco se notan en el filo de los riffs y en la precisión de la batería, mientras que el enfoque australiano aporta un carácter directo y devastador. Si bien algunas piezas pierden algo de cohesión en su afán por demostrar músculo técnico, el álbum en conjunto funciona como una descarga sólida y muy disfrutable.

Con un poco más de enfoque en la narrativa y en la estructuración de los temas, D.E.A.D podría estar en el camino hacia algo realmente demoledor. Este primer trabajo es un excelente punto de partida que deja la puerta abierta a un futuro prometedor en el metal extremo.

Nielsen’s drumming execution is meticulous, alternating between rapid patterns and groove moments that add weight and forcefulness to each attack. Meanwhile, Keane deploys an arsenal of riffs that channel both the vertigo of thrash and the density of the dirtiest death metal.

However, not everything is uncontrolled explosion. In tracks like «Death Toll» and «The Manifest» the band slows down to establish a pounding, almost ritualistic rhythm, where the staccatos invite the purest headbanging. These tracks stand out not only for their execution but also for their ability to build a dense and crushing atmosphere. The same happens in «Race to the Grave» which, with its galloping structure, recalls the early works of The Crown, achieving a perfect balance between brutality and dynamism.

What D.E.A.D proposes in «Of Vile and Hate» is not simply a collection of songs; it is a journey through a descent into the abyss. The conceptual plot of the album revolves around a man facing his final days, in a physical and spiritual transformation that goes from bodily decay to a resurrection tinged with crimson. This concept is especially palpable in «Buried» and «Dead» where the riffs take on a gloomy and oppressive tone, as if dragging the listener through a tunnel without light.

The closing with «The Spread» although powerful in its structure, is perhaps one of the moments where the band gets more carried away by technical demonstration than by compositional cohesion, something that also happens in certain sections of «Before I Die» Although the level of execution is remarkable, at times that unrestrained energy seems to drift away from the narrative core, losing a bit of focus. A minor detail in an album that, overall, knows how to manage its resources very well.

«Of Vile and Hate» is a resounding and honest debut, a statement of intent from a duo that, despite the distance, has managed to conjure up an unyielding, raw, and uncompromising death metal. The influences of Swedish death metal are evident in the sharpness of the riffs and the precision of the drumming, while the Australian approach brings a direct and devastating character. While some pieces lose a bit of cohesion in their eagerness to demonstrate technical prowess, the album as a whole functions as a solid and highly enjoyable blast.

With a little more focus on the narrative and the structuring of the tracks, D.E.A.D could be on the path to something truly devastating. This first work is an excellent starting point that leaves the door open to a promising future in extreme metal.
