Megascavanger – «Toxic Noxious Undeath»

Megascavanger - "Toxic Noxious Undeath"

(English Below)

There is an almost comforting certainty in the immutability of certain creators. In a musical ecosystem obsessed with constant reinvention -often a euphemism for a loss of identity- there are names that act as unshakeable monoliths. Rogga Johansson belongs to that rare breed of musicians whose prolific career does not dilute their impact, but rather refines it with the precision of a forensic surgeon. Six years have passed since «Songs In The Key Of Madness» breathed its last breath in 2020, a prolonged silence that is broken today by «Toxic Noxious Undeath», the new assault from Megascavenger. And it must be said without ambivalence: we are not only looking at the best work under this banner, but at one of the compositional peaks of the Swede’s entire discography, even surpassing the visceral punch of side projects like Paganizer or Ribspreader.

Approaching a Johansson record means understanding the sacred rules of old-school death metal: chainsaw-textured guitars, rhythms that alternate between the martial heaviness of mid-tempo and direct-to-the-jaw blasts, and an atmosphere where organic decay feels almost tangible. However, what elevates this album above the average is not just the mentor’s infallible riff factory, but a choral collaboration concept that transforms every track into a shared autopsy. Recruiting a different guest vocalist for each of the ten cuts could have been a simple commercial window-dressing gimmick; instead, the surgical selection of underground legends turns the album into a festival of metallic necrology.

Johan Berglund’s production at Studio Ulgnor deserves a separate mention. There is a muddy clarity in the mix that is nothing short of miraculous: the low frequencies of the bass lock in with a seismic solidity, allowing Thomas Ohlsson’sdrums to hit with a natural punch, free from the digital overproduction that suffocates modern metal. Every instrument sounds as though it were creaking under a slab of wet concrete.

The journey opens with «Graveyard Dreams And Bonehouse Screams», a textbook opening track featuring the unmistakable vocal presence of Kam Lee (Massacre). Lee’s contribution is a statement of intent: rotten to the core, spat with an expert disdain that fits perfectly with the gale of direct, addictive riffs Johansson sets forth. The energy of the start is irrepressible, setting a sky-high bar that, against all odds, the record refuses to abandon throughout its running time.

As we move forward, the album’s consistency throws off any attempt to find weak spots. «Corpses Below», featuring the cavernous roar of Felix Stass (Crematory), brings a denser texture, a funeral lament that balances the speed. Meanwhile, «Exploding Casket Syndrome» unleashes chaos with the participation of Erik Rundqvist (Vomitory), injecting a purulent aggressiveness that cuts through the air. It is fascinating to see how each guest does not limit themselves to performing over a generic track, but endows their song with a unique character, adapting their registers to the morbid architecture designed by Johansson’s guitar.

At the midway mark, «A World Of Fire And Brimstone» unfolds an unexpectedly melodic and somber side, where Berglund’s bass takes on a hypnotic prominence and lead guitar lines howl like souls in torment, raising the atmospheric tension to outstanding heights. Right after, «Heading For The Furnace», with Max Otero (Mercyless), shifts the focus right back to pure abrasion.

Toward the final stretch, tracks like «Shallow Grave Overflow» –crowned by the inhuman and cruel vocal lines of Dave Rotten (Avulsed)- emerge as pinnacles of pure rhythmic pestilence, a feast of rancid reanimation that grants no truce. The closing with «The Morbid Rides Again», backed by the reliability of Peter Svensson (Void Moon), seals the listener’s fate with the finality of a tomb locked up tight.

«Toxic Noxious Undeath» does not seek to reinvent the wheel; it prefers to roll it over a graveyard and crush everything in its path. With Lucretia Morti’s grotesque and detailed artwork serving as the perfect visual shroud, this Xtreem Music release is a masterclass in keeping the integrity of true death metal intact. It is an album that smells of freshly turned earth and metallic offal, conceived by minds that have inhabited the shadows for decades and are still hungry for fresh blood.
