There is an ominous silence that often weighs heavier than any barrage of instrumental fury a temporal void that, in the case of acts rooted in the depths of the Norwegian underground, tends to accumulate bile, despair, and an uncontainable compositional urgency. Seven long years have passed since Vingulmork‘s machinery exhaled its last recorded breath with the 2019 EP «Avgrunn». Seven years of hibernation during which the outside world faltered, while this Oslo-born quartet -forged in 2013 under the polar cold and classic ferocity of the Scandinavian scene- secretly steeped a comeback that defies all expected inertia. With this new discographic assault titled «Barmhjertighetens Fallitt», released under the rare and formidable trifecta alliance of Crime Records, Likskue Productions, and Schattenpfade, the band does not merely break the spell of silence: they deliver their darkest, heaviest, most ambitious, and most visceral work to date.
To understand the magnitude of this release, one must briefly look through the rearview mirror. Ever since their full-length debut with «Chiaroscuro» in 2015 -described at the time by specialized critics as «nasty and fulfilling»- Vingulmork proved that their approach to black metal paid no mind to dogmatic purism or sterile genre boundaries. Their sound has always prioritized a colossal density of riffs driven by unusual melodic and atmospheric heaviness. However, on «Barmhjertighetens Fallitt», that alchemy reaches an unexpected boiling point. Born of rage, despair, and the bitter sediment of shattered dreams, the album stands as a cohesive, desolate narrative where every track functions as an essential gear in a macabre clockwork mechanism.
The experience crashes down on the listener without warning via “Ørkesløs”, the opening track that acts like a direct punch to the jaw. The intensity unleashed from the very first second is staggering: a perpetual motion where Jostein Stensrud Køhn‘s vocals howl like a demonic entity trapped in an Arctic storm, backed by an incisive guitar attack signed by Martin Kandola and the relentless pulse of Simen Kandola‘s drumming. The production -polished across several key studios (Top Room, Sounds Of O, MOTU, and Stokkosen) before receiving the definitive master touch from Robin Mahler at Ocean Studios (Germany)- endows the ensemble with a muscular, sharp clarity that breathes chilling organic vitality. Martin Storm-Olsen‘s bass cements a seismic substrate upon which the record’s coldest passages are built.
As the journey unfolds, the album disrupts any attempt to hunt for filler tracks; its conceptual cohesion is one of its greatest triumphs. The dark magic manifests forcefully when the drums emerge with thunderous power beneath the portentous atmosphere of “Skam”, or when the majestic darkness of “Avmakt” organically collapses into the blizzard of riffs defining the lead single, “Krigserklæring”. The compositional versatility continues to dazzle on “Svart Time”,where precise, intricate guitar tremolos construct a textured landscape over which the vocals rise with superb cruelty.
In the second half of the record, the narrative tension does not flag for a single moment. Labyrinthine tracks like “Alarm” and “Nådestøt” set the stage for the final stretch, where pieces as evocative as “Mannen og kråka” and the hypnotic drift of “Trolldom” plunge the listener into absolute existential exposure. The climax arrives courtesy of “Brann”, a martial, warrior-like rallying cry that slowly burns out in the shadows, consumed by its own intensity before closing the cycle with the final statement, “Fallitt”. The striking, detail-rich cover art conceived by Jon Schaug Carlsen visually seals the experience with unmatched aesthetic oppression.
Score: 9.3 / 10
«Barmhjertighetens Fallitt» is not simply a remarkable record within the modern black metal ecosystem; it is a masterclass in how creative patience and artistic integrity can give birth to an instant classic. Uncompromising, unyielding, captivating, and imaginative to the point of frenzy, Vingulmork has returned to claim by force a throne they should have never abandoned. An obligatory listen that will leave an indelible mark on the European underground circuit.
