Hay épocas en las que el metal extremo corre el peligro de convertirse en una mera competición de velocidad y producción estéril, un ejercicio atlético donde el alma del género se pierde en favor de la perfección digital. Sin embargo, hay proyectos que entienden que el verdadero poder de la música extrema reside en la atmósfera, en el espacio claustrofóbico que se crea entre un riff devastador y el silencio que lo precede. Mangled Carpenter, liderados por la mente inquieta de Seth Metoyer, han operado siempre en los márgenes más lúcidos de la brutalidad. Desde el primer segundo, el proyecto deja claro que no busca la complacencia. Metoyer, cuya trayectoria incluye desde el caos desbocado de Pulpit Vomit hasta propuestas más melódicas en solitario, canaliza aquí toda esa experiencia en seis cortes donde la estructura y el ritmo pesan tanto como la fuerza bruta. Acompañado por Kris Olson al bajo y las programaciones de batería de Mac Hine, el trío logra un sonido que es a la vez orgánico y mecánicamente amenazante, un yunque donde se golpean las ideas más oscuras sobre el juicio, la violencia y la resistencia espiritual.
La pista que da título al trabajo, «Between Blood And Silence», abre las hostilidades con un ataque metódico, denso y deliberado. No hay carreras innecesarias; la agresión está controlada, dosificada con una frialdad que incrementa la tensión. La transición hacia «Carved» mantiene esa misma escuela de peso y groove, utilizando el espacio y la contención para que cada golpe percusivo se sienta como un impacto físico directo sobre el oyente. Es en esta economía de elementos donde la banda demuestra su madurez compositiva: menos notas, pero infinitamente más intención.
El primer sencillo, «The Absence Of Light», marca un punto de inflexión al inyectar una dosis de ferocidad directa, combinando texturas abrasivas con ráfagas de velocidad implacable que demuestran la destreza instrumental del trío. No obstante, uno de los momentos más celebrados de este lanzamiento es la audaz adaptación de «Down, Down, To Goblin Town», un corte que equilibra la potencia del grindcore con una estructura memorable y una interpretación vocal feroz que corta como un cristal roto.
El respeto por los cimientos del metal extremo también se hace patente en la acertada versión del clásico de Mortification, «Terminate Damnation», reinterpretada a través del filtro contemporáneo y áspero de Mangled Carpenter sin perder ni un ápice de su mística original. El cierre con «Short, Sharp, Shock» es exactamente lo que su título promete: un castigo breve, conciso y devastador que no deja espacio para la tregua ni para el remordimiento, clausurando el viaje con la contundencia de una puerta de hierro cerrándose para siempre.

There are eras in which extreme metal runs the risk of becoming a mere competition of speed and sterile production, an athletic exercise where the soul of the genre is lost in favor of digital perfection. However, there are projects that understand that the true power of extreme music resides in the atmosphere, in the claustrophobic space created between a devastating riff and the silence that precedes it. Mangled Carpenter, led by the restless mind of Seth Metoyer, have always operated on the most lucid fringes of brutality. After the excellent aftertaste left by their album «Salvation Syndrome» in 2023, this new EP, titled «Between Blood And Silence», does not limit itself to replicating the formula: it disassembles it, submerges it in acid, and rebuilds it with a surgical precision that terrifies and fascinates in equal measure.
From the first second, the project makes it clear that it does not seek complacency. Metoyer, whose trajectory ranges from the unbridled chaos of Pulpit Vomit to more melodic solo proposals, channels all that experience here into six tracks where structure and groove weigh just as much as brute force.
