El ecuador del disco se consolida con «Towards the Veil of Heretic Plagues» y «Poisoned Flesh (Mark of the Sinister Path)».

Southern Chile possesses an atypical climatic aura within the South American map: the unrelenting humidity and constant rain seem to seep directly into the rehearsal walls until the sound of its bands is petrified. It is from this hostile geography that Deconsekrated has forged their second full-length effort, «The Inexorable Transcendence of Death», released under the Greco-Roman label Nuclear Winter Records. Following the notable international impact of their 2024 EP, «Ascension in the Altar of Condemned», the lineup formed by Agorh Skullptor in 2020 definitively sheds the label of mere promise to establish itself at the forefront of the trans-Andean underground with a work that rejects modern artificiality and overproduction.
Instead of falling into the sterile exercise of Old School Death Metal nostalgia that saturates the European and North American markets, the Chilean band has achieved something infinitely more complex: capturing the genre’s liturgical and suffocating essence through a sonic architecture of oppressive density. «The Inexorable Transcendence of Death» does not seek to invent a new language, but rather to exhaust the expressive capacities of dissonance, low tuning, and cavernous momentum without ever losing a sense of dynamism or compositional elegance.
Acoustically speaking, the album dispenses with sterile digital polish. The mix allows the guitars of Skullptor and Padaviast to breathe with a raw, harsh, mid-range saturation between 400 and 800 Hz, emulating the legendary Scandinavian distortion while processing it through a dark, mucoid prism closer to the Finnish sound of Krypts or early death/doom. The rhythm section, anchored by Rigor Mortis‘s drumming, does not drown in the mud of artificial reverb; the low-end frequencies of the kick drum and the dry snap of the snare maintain a crisp relief, providing the necessary foundation for complex tempo transitions to feel organic and physical.
The journey begins uncompromisingly with «Purgative Procession», an instrumental piece that shuns ambient synthesizer clichés in favor of a crescendo of abrasive guitars and funeral march rolls. It serves as the logical prelude to the carnage of «Drowned in the Deep Waters of Phlegethon», where Gül Evokator’s vocal range emerges not as a monotonous grunt, but as a cavernous guttural invocation, modulated in the pharyngeal cavity with a projection that conjures liturgical decrepitude. The guitar work on this track stands out through dissonant arpeggios suspended over traditional blast beats, creating a striking sense of spatial vertigo.
The album’s turning point arrives early with its third track and lead single, «Terrifying Manifestation of Malevolence». While a surface-level listen might dismiss this composition as a simple onslaught of relentless violence, attentive ears will discover a fascinating micro-dynamic in the articulation of the frets. The guitars subtly alternate between tremolo riffing in augmented fifths and passages of suffocating deceleration where Skullptor’s bass pushes the mix into sub-bass territory, rattling the speakers. The song structure unfolds non-linearly, eschewing conventional verse-chorus cycles to advance in a continuous descent of tension and rhythmic release.
The middle section of the record cements its strength with «Towards the Veil of Heretic Plagues» and «Poisoned Flesh (Mark of the Sinister Path)». On the latter, the influence of acts like Dead Congregation or Incantation becomes evident in how the drum patterns shatter standard time signatures. Rigor Mortis does not merely keep time; he uses china cymbals and snare accents to destabilize the rhythmic drive just as the listener tries to settle into the groove. This metric friction maintains a latent threat throughout the track’s nearly six-minute duration.
In the final stretch, «Under the Rotten Shroud» and «Oracula Sanguinis (Obsidian Mirrors)» offer passages where theological and anti-dogmatic lyrics merge with an almost shamanic atmosphere. The guitar production doubles the tonal frequencies in counterpoint, allowing an analytical ear to distinguish two distinct lines of attack across the stereo spectrum: one guitar holds down the heavy rhythmic framework on the left channel, while the other traces mournful, dissonant melodies on the right. The record concludes with «Through the Graves’ Portals», a monumental finale that encapsulates the band’s philosophy: uncompromising aggression, catatonic cadences, and a harmonic resolution that leaves an aftertaste of ash and dampness.
Contrary to certain media outlets that tend to write off these releases as «just another great South American death metal record» based solely on geographical clichés and unbridled aggression, it is crucial to emphasize that Deconsekrated’s true merit lies in restraint. There are no superfluous, virtuoso-driven solos or gratuitous speed sections designed to pad runtime. Every single riff on «The Inexorable Transcendence of Death» serves a narrative function within the album’s concept: spiritual transmutation through inevitable biological collapse.
Rating: 8.5/10
Deconsekrated has delivered a sophomore album that not only far surpasses the freshness of their previous EP, but also places the band on the same tier of excellence as their labelmates on Nuclear Winter Records. «The Inexorable Transcendence of Death» is a masterclass in rigor, obscurity, and craftsmanship within contemporary extreme metal.
