Inspired by the Passion of Christ as a metaphor for a society that has hollowed truth of its meaning -where any narrative can be manipulated or erased by power interests- Basque project Ashen has announced all the details of their highly anticipated debut album, «The Never Ending Search».
Musically, the release defies genre conventions by blending crushing doom metal passages with black metal fury, blast beats, punishing riffs, and melodic textures of deep emotional resonance. Sung in both English and Euskara (Basque), the record transcends traditional scene themes to immerse itself in internal conflict, societal decay, and the fracture between humanity and the natural environment.
The album’s centerpiece stands out through artistically ambitious compositions, weaving together slow, heavy riffs, hypnotic guitars with subtle Middle Eastern nuances that pull the listener into a trance, acoustic passages, spoken word segments, and a final climax as aggressive as it is agonizing.
The visual concept of the work is reflected in its cover art, crafted by Mikel Telletxea, which depicts an infinite labyrinth shaped like a fingerprint a graphic representation of an apparently endless search, both inward into the psyche and outward toward the world.
Founded in 2022 by Mikel Telletxea (vocals, guitars, and programming), Ashen began as a solo endeavor before establishing itself as a solid creative duo with the addition of bassist Atauzz (known for his work in acts such as Korkut, Kurkuma, and 2Sonte).
To capture the raw energy and sheer grit of the material with utmost precision, the duo recorded this debut at Spain’s Atala Studios. The mastering process was subsequently entrusted to the expert hands of Tony Lindgren at Sweden’s Fascination Street Studios a mark of top-tier quality backed by his work for heavyweights like Dimmu Borgir, Katatonia, and Kreator.
